# Some Souls Were Sent to Reap

3 min read

Go ahead. — Cash in the policies.

Go ahead.
Cash in the policies.
Count what you think death owes you.
Read the fine print beneath a blackened moon
and convince yourself
you understood the bargain.
You summoned Death
while believing Death was merely a word.
Now Death has answered.
Not because of the current state of my affairs.
Not because I begged for judgment.
Not because vengeance called its name.
Some doors open
simply because fools keep knocking.
And Death has always been patient.
You thought the Reaper came for bodies.
How little you understand.
Death is simple—
the heart goes quiet,
the lungs surrender their final breath,
and flesh returns to the earth
that loaned it bones.
But the Reaper?
The Reaper deals in something older.
It reaches beyond flesh,
beyond blood,
beyond the temporary architecture of a name,
and severs what was woven
through generations.
When a body disappears,
a chair becomes empty.
When a soul is removed,
the absence echoes backward.
Grandchildren dream differently.
Ancestors stir in forgotten places.
Old patterns collapse without explanation.
Doors once destined to open
remain forever closed.
That is why you should be careful
with the games you play
and far more careful
with whom you choose as your opponent.
Not every quiet person is defenseless.
Not every solitary figure is abandoned.
Not every soul walking through darkness
is trying to escape it.
Some were taught there.
Some were tempered there.
Some learned the names
of every creature hiding inside it.
And some—
some souls were never sent here
to be hunted.
They were sent here
to witness the harvest.
So count your money.
Polish your little policies.
Celebrate whatever victory
you believe you purchased.
But remember:
you called something ancient
into a game
whose rules you never understood.
Some souls will be spared.
Some illusions will not.
Some bloodlines will awaken
to find the old machinery broken,
the ancient debts canceled,
and the inheritance of cruelty
buried with the generation
that refused to release it.
Because the Reaper does not always arrive
with a blade.
Sometimes it arrives as truth.
Sometimes as exposure.
Sometimes as the sudden ending
of a power people believed
would belong to them forever.
And sometimes
the most terrifying thing Death can collect
is not a life—
but the lie
that kept generations imprisoned.
So be careful
which darkness you summon.
Be careful
which graves you disturb.
Be careful
which soul you decide
was born to become your prey.
Because occasionally
the figure standing across from you
was never placed upon this earth
for the harvest.
**Sometimes,
it was sent to reap.**
